On Wednesday, September 13, business professionals from around the state of Wisconsin gathered in Madison to attend the 2017 WEDA Community & Economic Development Award ceremony. Peter Fletcher, who is the Transportation Planner for the Mississippi River Regional Planning Commission, attended the ceremony as a representative for the S.M.R.T. Bus initiative, which was one of the three finalists in the category of “Economic Development Initiative.” The other two finalists were “Amplify Oshkosh” from Oshkosh, and “Business Walk” from Madison, WI. Although the two other finalists had a tremendous effect on their respective communities, the S.M.R.T. Bus initiative was seen as most impactful. Peter Fletcher took home the first-place award for his years of hard-work devoted to connecting Prairie du Chien and Viroqua with the City of La Crosse. The S.M.R.T. Bus has seen incredible support from the region, and in fact, recent polls have shown that the initiative has an astonishing 100% approval rating. Peter is now looking to expand the service to both Sparta and Tomah, WI this coming October. Congratulations to Peter and the rest of his team on receiving this well-deserved award, and thank you for working to improve not only the City of La Crosse, but the entire surrounding community.
