A local program that gives college scholarships to families who build new houses is expanding its reach.
Since last September, the new La Crosse Promise program has already committed to providing college scholarships to kids from four different families who will build or renovate a home in the Powell-Poage-Hamilton or Washburn neighborhoods.
Each participating family can receive up to $50,000 in college scholarships and each individual can receive up to $25,000.
On Monday, the program made a big announcement: Adults can also receive those scholarships.
“We did have some inquires, some from young single people, who weren’t sure if they were going to have children but they were interested in building in the neighborhood and perhaps going back to school some day,” said Jerilyn Dinsmoor, Executive Director of La Crosse Promise. “And in other instances we had parents that said ‘I’d like to go back and get a nursing degree or a master’s degree.”
Many of the same requirements for children receiving the scholarships will also apply to adults. SEE FULL STORY
